Tony Martin, Mark Nesler, Tom Shapiro & Keith Urban Celebrate at BMI

<dc:subject>Bentley, Dierks, Martin, Tony, McGraw, Tim, Nesler, Mark, Shapiro, Tom, Strait, George, Urban, Keith, Country, Nashville</dc:subject>

BMI toasted the veteran trio of hit-makers behind BMI songwriter Keith Urban’s latest no. 1, “You Look Good in My Shirt,” Monday, November 3 in its Music Row offices. Written by BMI troubadours Tony Martin, Mark Nesler and Tom Shapiro, the single originally earned a spot on Urban’s 2002 releaseGolden Road, but its effervescent popularity led to its second recording for his Be Here project and subsequent release as a single.

Keith Urban and the song’s writers pause for a photo. Pictured are (l-r): Mark Nesler, Tom Shapiro, Keith Urban, and Tony Martin.

All three of the song’s writers boast enduring familiarity with chart success, both together and individually: Mark Nesler’s compositions include Tim McGraw’s “Just to See You Smile” and George Strait’s “Go On”; Tony Martin co-wrote “Just to See You Smile” with Nesler, but also co-penned Dierks Bentley’s “Settle for a Slowdown” and much more; and Tom Shapiro’s long list of smashes earned him a spot in the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame this year. Addressing the crowd after the numerous award presentations, Tony Martin quipped, “Songs are like children. I’m just so happy some of them actually go off and make a living.”

BMI cheered the mushrooming success of songwriter Bobby Pinson Thursday, October 30 in Nashville. Currently enjoying an enviable winning streak, the songwriter’s most recent collaboration with Sugarland, “All I Want to Do,” topped the charts. Sugarland’s Kristian Bush, also a BMI songwriter, and Jennifer Nettles, were on the road and unable to attend, but Pinson himself attracted a jubilant crowd to BMI’s Music Row offices. BMI’s Jody Williams praised the brandish confidence of the witty songwriter, whose songs have also reached the airwaves through Toby Keith, Trent Tomlinson, Emerson Drive, Marty Stuart and more.

BMI welcomed members of Music Row’s community to the Musicians Hall of Fame Monday, October 20 for a two-pronged celebration of Brad Paisley’s latest Frank Rogers-produced chart-toppers: “I’m Still a Guy,” co-written by BMI songwriter Lee Thomas Miller, Kelley Lovelace, and Paisley and published by Didn’t Have to Be Music, EMI Music Publishing, Noah’s Little Boat Music and Sea Gayle Music and “Waitin’ on a Woman,” co-penned by BMI songwriter Varble and Don Sampson and also published by EMI Music Publishing and Sea Gayle Music, along with Warner-Tamerlane Publishing Company.

“Waitin’ on a Woman” became Paisley’s eighth consecutive no. 1 single, officially making the reigning CMA Male Vocalist of the Year the purveyor of more consecutive top singles than any other country artist in the 18-year history of Nielsen BDS-monitored airplay. As consistent as he is potent, Paisley has earned a total of 12 chart-topping songs throughout his career.
